unZined Reviews - Louie Louie - Carry the Man

Louie Louie, a four piece band with a twist. The twist is that whilst Paul Limer and Tom Pallett call Oldham, Manchester home, front woman Rita Faria and her brother Pedro Faria hail from Lisbon, Portugal. With their mix of different music styles they promise a unique and creative sound to their music. Performing with their current line up since September 2014, they have used this time to hone in their act, perfect and find their sound.

After hearing about them on fellow Little Indie Night resident, Iain Tinsley's unsigned radio show on Halton Community Radio and being intrigued about them and their origins, unZined reached out to find out more and review their latest release which they were more then happy for us to. Check it out below:

unZined Review - Sly Antics - Captive City EP

Three-Piece Alt-rock band Sly Antics consisting of cousins Sam and Lee Hudson and Alex Thompson from Manchester, are looking to ramp up their promotional efforts since forming earlier on this year and prior to releasing their debut release, Captive City, in December. Sam got in touch to see if I'd be up for providing a sneak preview of their five track release by reviewing two songs from the EP. Obviously, I jumped at the chance, as we at unZined love to hear from local bands and spread the word out about them. Check out my review below:

unZined Review - Andrew Warner

Once in while the bands / artists come to us, whether it be word of mouth or just seeing one of our reviews. This rarity hopefully will be a sign others will follow suit, as we love discovering new artists and promoting their wares. It gives me great pleasure to introduce Andrew Warner, a budding solo artist from Manchester.
"I blend indie pop with a sprinkle of catchy hooks, a pinch of folk and a dash of honesty. I craft songs ranging from literal social commentary to metaphorical musing, leading to a memorable set of original tracks."
Andrew approached us at unZined looking to get our verdict on his debut release Tales of a Twenty-Something, which from his own words is something special featuring social commentary set to a folk-pop sound. Its interesting to learn that all of the tracks on the EP are performed and produced by himself. This has definitely piqued my interest already. Lets press on with the review below:

unZined Introduces - Two of Substance

unZined are always on the search for new local bands/artists, searching social media and the internet itself for those music acts who deserve notice. From the beginnings of unZined, its amazing just how much local music talent is out there. But, from experience searching for these promising acts, even with the aid of social media and the numerous band directories out there, these bands still go by un-noticed right on our doorstep.

It's great when we stumble across bands/artists who have gone under our radar. We recently found Two of Substance, a three-piece Alternative Rock band hailing from Runcorn, Cheshire. Aaron Holmes (guitar), Tommy Haywood (vocals/bass) and Grant Sweeney (drums), Influenced by the likes of Versus the World, Nirvana, Royal Blood and Foo Fighters to name the few, have started out on the road to creating their own sound with the plan of making a name for themselves.
"After Tommy & Grant finished their voluntary duties in Africa in early 2014, Aaron suggested starting a band and within a few months were already recording their debut EP at Parr Street Studios. Not long after they starting working heavily on writing their debut full length album. Originally wanting to avoid a specific genre, we experimented with as many different styles of music as possible in their Self-Titled EP in order to get a feel on what the true calling for the band's longevity was."
We got the chance to listen to their release, which you can check out below. My personal favorites from the release are "You" and "Not Going Anywhere". Both showcase their talent and to me at least are the best from the release. Its evident from listening to them that they have a strong influence from the US alt rock scene. Not Going Anywhere is however my fave from the two as it sounds overall more well produced and could be something I'd myself pick to be played at one of our Indie Nights - upbeat, rocking and well-produced. Check it out below. The rest of the album is still great, as the other songs showcase their talent, diversity and personality as a band with its quirky lyrics and inclusion of other instruments. You can hear the full album here.

Verdict: I look forward to seeing how the band evolves as they gig more and release more EPs. They've got some great tunes recorded, two well made music videos and have supported a US pop-punk band Versus the World. I would personally like to hear more tracks like "You" and "Not Going Anywhere" from future releases, as I think it would serve them best as they follow an already tested sound, but are unique in their own way. In the end however, they should stick to what they do best - playing the music they love and having fun.

unZined Introduces - Bandito Rey

Introducing.....

Davy Murphy - Guitar/keys/FX
Jams Ward - Drums
Dave Copley - Bass

Ioan Llewelyn - Vocals
Collectively, they are known as Bandito Rey, a self described experimental, electronic and alternative band from the North West, England. They state on their website they have a wide range in style and to showcase this, they have release two previous songs "Laag" and "Come on Baby". Their influences include Aphex Twin, Radiohead, Morrisey and Massive Attack.
"Bandito Rey name was put together by Murphy speaking to his partner (Corinne) about band names. Murphy's  who's own amp is called a Peavy 112 Bandit and their former band's singer was in a band called the "The Bandits". Bandito is Spanish for bandit and Rey means king also in Spanish.
Bandito Rey recently has introduced a professional looking website to make it easier for their audience to keep updated and have released a single, "Juicy Fruit".

Their third music release interestingly enough called "Juicy Fruit" starts off with a chewy simple bass line and accompanying synth and then ups the tempo with some fast drums and a clever simple guitar riff. Shortly, after a quick intro the vocals step up to the mark with meaty sounding guitars and bass. Added to by synth in the background this song quickly and evidently becomes a well produced and played song.  Towards the end it simplifies the intensity like the intro before building it up again with vocals and guitar and a sudden finish. All in all, its a very professional and enjoyable song. Having already produced two strong releases previously, they have surpassed themselves with a great release and I will watch avidly for further singles, or hopefully an album in the future.

"We are Some Kind Of Illness a three piece alternative indie band formed in Manchester, England. We combine alternative indie songwriting with an atmospheric, reverberant backbone to create a sound described as "calming" and "beautiful" :)"

Paul Hinks (vocals/guitar) from the band approached me to review their latest self-titled album and I jumped at the chance, as at first glance their music description  is something unique and something I'd enjoy listening to and reviewing. Check it out below.

unZined - The Six Thirties - From the Get Go

We at unZined previously featured this up and coming band on our blog in December 2014. The Six Thirties at the time they didn't have much recorded material, but from the rehearsal footage, it got me excited for what they could produce if given the change.

It seems they did have the chance and have released a well produced, upbeat, power house of a song called From the Get Go.

The song starts off with a nice riff which sets the scene. You can imagine being in the crowd watching as they play this riff, which as you listen builds up the atmosphere. In come the bass and drums, not a lot, but enough to build it up. There's a definite Smiths influence there in the riff I think. As the song breaks into the verse it cranks up the tempo and brings in the vocals. It's a well written song; one you'd expect to be written by a well known American rock band along the lines of Saving Abel or something. The chorus comes in and its got catchy unique memorable lyrics. The only criticism I have however, is that with the song being an upbeat rock number, the vocals fall short of being punchy and loud. In any future release, backing vocals could make a big difference, which could enhance the song loads.

Overall, its a great release, one that gives you a taste of what the band can do and where they are headed musically. I enjoyed it and look forward to future releases and possibly seeing them live at one of their future gigs. Check it out below:

unZined Reviews - The Spitting Pips - You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet

Psychedelic indie rockers, The Spitting Pips, hailing from sunny Rhyl are no strangers to Little Indie Night. They've previously been featured, which you can check out here and have played at two of our events in the past, including Little Indie Fest, which was an overall success partly thanks to their set.

The Spitting Pips seem to be tackling further afield with their gigs, including other festivals and gigs around the North West. Since we last caught up with them they seem to have picked up a further musician to their band named Dave Podbury. To further increase their fan base they've released a six strong EP release titled You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet, which can be pre-ordered at the bottom of this post. We've been invited to preview their upcoming release and give our review. Here we go.
