Lazing on a sunny afternoon. (well evening)

The sun is sort of shining a bit so there's still a little time to dust off the deck chair and get out the back and stick on a couple of these sunny day records on, enjoy.

Long Players

Some continuous grooves found on the internet this week.

When you play music from the internet you kind of stop multi-tasking and can really focus on the music right ? ... We are all surprised about how much better 'The Black Keys' sound on erm .. zipped up to fcuk MP3 yeah !! ... You can really dig that depth in the music ... background and foreground leftfield and right ... right ? ....... We love the ritual of sliding that file out of that playlist and into the "playing now" section of an interface, then slowly placing the finger onto the play button. .... Blissful.

However ... even though we love our music files we still kind of 'get', how the majority of people appreciate the convenience of vinyl and how vinyl can have no degradation in quality whatsoever ... We appreciate how convenient it is to hear an endless amount of different bands by simply getting in the car, catching a train, or popping down to the local record store in the rain and going through the whole stock. Easily done if you have a spare day or two.

Real Estate - Atlas

Modern Baseball - You're Gonna Miss It All

Metronomy - Love Letters

La Dispute - Rooms Of The House

Maya Jane Coles - Comfort

Tokyo Police Club - Forcefield

Funk, Soul, Rock n Roll Vice & Versa

You know the deal ... maybe you have got a few tunes on your shelf ... maybe you rarely stick them on because you own the records on multiple formats ? ... Maybe you should blog about them ... These again pulled out at Random.

Santana III ... The album was also known as ' The Man With The Outstretched hand.

The Beta Band - The Beta Band ... Debut album from The Beta Band ... The band themselves call it "fcuk'in awful" ... I love it myself like.

Beastie Boys - Check Your Head ... seemed to take ages for the Beasties to release this .. Pauls Boutique had been out for ages.

Funk, Soul, Rock n' Roll Vice & Versa

Three pulled blindly from the record shelves in no order whatsoever I'll probably never ever play them on a Friday ... there again ... might do ??

Pop Will Eat Itself - Stourbridge Grebo types known as The Poppies by some ... sample driven alternative music ... this is the tune that come from the shelf anyhow.

Co Real Artists - What About You ( Stones Throw ) Stones throw are an American Los Angeles based Independent music label. 'What about You' is claimed by some to be the first ever 'rap' record ? - if true then it predates many others said to hold that title.

Agent Provocatuer - Agent Dan // John Gosling also known as Mekon ( and its signed ... from when he played at The Stoned Soul Picnic - Get In !!!  ) featuring Shaun Ryder.

Sam Clark - Hijack Set 18/4/14

The Hijack hour is an hour where you take control of the music - This is Sam's set from Fridays Little Indie Night - Get Involved !!

New Tunes Review Apr '14

Here's a selection of music gems I've uncovered while mining the music sites recently. Check them out.

1. Korea vs Canada - The Hudson Branch

Melodic, atmospheric and bluesy; The Hudson Branch have just made this song one of my faves of the month. Blues Rock is definitely on the up thanks to the likes of the Black Keys. The combo the great clean and distorted guitar, vocals and organ make this song stand out from the crowd for me.

2. Automatic - Eagle and the Worm

Trumpets.... You don't hear them much in modern music. This band has taken them and successfully incorporated them into a song with synth and experimental sounds. Got a Gorrilaz feel about it, and its easy to see why. Very catchy song to bop yer head to.

3. Lost your Way - The Nocturnal Company

This chill out tune from The Nocturnal Company showcases a steady beat with organ and a nice sounding guitar. Nothing fancy here, just the basics. Great sounding track worthy of the list.

4. No Mercy - Makthaverskan

Absolutely love things songs vibe. A strong female lead with a up tempo beat. Haunting echo in the vocals and backing vocals, make this song a goodun. Love everything about it.

5. White Lights - Purple Valentino

A fast, strong with male and female vocals, great guitar throughout. Reminds me of some 80s rock tune I’ve long since forgotten. The song showcases a band which has probably been at it a while and are comfortable in what they do. Very nice to listen to in contrast with the slow indie tunes infusing the charts in recent months.

6. The Fathom Line - The Hazey Janes

A steady rock tune with above average vocals and exceptional guitar work. Very easy on the ears and enjoyable to listen to.

7. Amber Run - Spark

A well made melodic love ballad which builds up to a more uptempo with a unique sound and great lyrics that will make it one to stick in your head for a while. Let the light in.

8. Killer Bangs - Honey Blood

One to dance to. The beat, female harmonious vocals and distorted guitar make this one of them songs you love at an indie night, or just one to nod your head to. Got to admit songs like this appeal to me a lot.

9. Kathleen - Catfish and the Bottlemen

Local band Catfish and the Bottlemen (unusual name) have come on leaps and bounds. I saw them one under a different guise gigging in Runcorn no less, back then they showed promise. This song showcases that promise in gallons. Strong vocals and great beat to the song make it a overall great tune.

10. Daisy Eyes - I Know Leopard

Another obvious Black Keys influenced band with a hint of psychedelia. Got a very retro sound to it from its backing vocals to its nice beat throughout.

11. Candyman - Darlia

A rare grunge inspired tune from Darlia. The harmony in the vocals make this song stand out and shows progression from old school grunge.

12. Where did the love go - Bipolar Sunshine

Melodic, harmonious, down tempo and full of metaphors, this love ballad has it all. Easy listening and good for a chillout.

13. Coming Home - Kaiser Chiefs

Ricky and co are back with this anthem of a tune, with lyrics easy to sing along to and will no doubt be in your head for a while.

14. Here it comes again - The Amazing Snakeheads

From the start, nice beat and bass, then the vocals, the rasping vocals make this a post punk gem.

15. Love me More - Beautiful Boy

A mix of acoustic and electric, a good blend of vocals and upbeat drums. The drums in particular stand out, nice song which seems to have it all.

16. Echo and the Bunnymen - Lovers on the Run

The haunting vocals we know and love from EATB are back. Showing they still have it and can create a great arrangement of instruments and lyrics. Enjoyable to listen to.

17. Steamroller - Port Isla

A resonating up tempo gem here, with nice guitar, vocals and drums throughout. Very easy on the ears.

Its Good Friday ... Have a Bloody Mary

Whatever you are doing this weekend have yourself a top Easter xxx

The Long Good Friday theme tune and another electro classic.

The Long Good Friday is a 1980's film starring ol' Bobby Hoskins as Harold Shand, a London gangster who wants to become a legitimate businessman, with the financial support of the American Mafia fancies redeveloping the London docklands as a venue for a future Olympic Games.

Well worth sticking on one night if you're into violent films, bombs going off and one liners like ...

"There's a lot of dignity in that, isn't there ? Going out like a raspberry ripple"

Doolittle - The Pixies

Happy Birthday 'Doolittle' ... 25 years young on Friday 18th April

Of The Mersey

Fingymebob is on soon ... Liverpool Sound City

We also love Culture City TV

Not sure if these are playing or not ... probably are ? ... dunno ... a few tunes from the fantastic mersey area anyhow.

Funk, Soul, Rock n' Roll, Vice & Versa

Hooks three albums from the record shelf ( its just how they come out ) then post a couple of youtube vids.

Enter The Dragon - The soundtrack of that boss film where Brucey baby spies on a reclusive crime Lord. The film is pure stir fry bossness with a double nunchuck across your noodle soundtrack.

Stand Up & Be Counted - Soul Funk & Jazz from a revolutionary period when tunes were like messages from the front lines.

Three Feet High And Rising - De la Souls debut album on Tommy Boy... One of those albums consistently being placed on 'greatest albums' lists by them critical type folk who just ponder over stuff all the time.

Musical Intro Journey

It's Sunday and what better to do on this fine evening than kick back, relax and listen to some blinding tunes with glass shattering, mind blowing, eye wateringly brilliant intros? Nothing I tell you, NOTHING.

 First off, of course.....

Baba O'Riley - The Who
INTRO LENGTH APPROX 1:06

Townshend stated in an interview that "'Baba O' Riley' is about the absolute desolation of teenagers at Woodstock, where everyone was smacked out on acid and 20 people had brain damage. The contradiction was that it became a celebration: 'Teenage Wasteland, yes! We're all wasted!'"

Push - The Cure
INTRO LENGTH APPROX  2:23

"I had no desire to be famous,
I wanted to make the greatest music ever made.
I didn't want anyone to know who I was"
- Robert Smith

Ceremony - New Order
INTRO LENGTH APPROX 1:02

"Ceremony" is a song by Joy Division, released as New Order's debut single in 1981. The song, as well as the B-side, "In a Lonely Place", were written as Joy Division prior to the death of Ian Curtis. Both were carried over to the band's re-incarnation as New Order.

Elephant Stone - The Stone Roses
INTRO LENGTH APPROX 1:47

"Elephant Stone" was the third single by The Stone Roses and their first release on Silvertone Records. It was produced by New Order bassist Peter Hook in his own studio initially for release on Rough Trade Records and remixed by John Leckie following a deal with Silvertone Records.

"It's not where you're for, It's where you're at"
- Ian Brown

L.A Woman - The Doors
INTRO LENGTH APPROX 0.55 (Not the longest but equally as tasty)

L.A. Woman is the sixth studio album by The Doors, and the last recorded with lead singer Jim Morrison, who died in July 1971, less than 3 months after the album's release.

"There are things know
and things unknown and in between are the doors"
- Jim Morrison

And ending with a bit of 80's goodness here's.......

I Ran (So Far Away) - A Flock of Seagulls
INTRO LENGTH APPROX 1:33

Three different versions of the song exist:
  • The long version (5:07) features an introduction with swirling synthesizer noises which then segues into a lengthy instrumental passage by the band before leading into the song. It concludes with a guitar solo and comes to a full ending. This version was featured on some pressings of A Flock of Seagulls and is featured on all CD versions of the album.
  • The video version (3:58) omits most of the introductory section and begins with a cymbal crash but retains the full ending of the long version. This version was featured on some pressings of A Flock of Seagulls.
  • The radio edit (3:43) begins with a cymbal crash and loops the song's final chorus, fading out at the end.

If you ask me the longest version is the best, which is why I've given you that one to treat your ears with.......

Hope you enjoyed the Journey!

xxxx

All intro lengths I have just guessed by listening to the original tracks
so they're not accurate just a bit of a guess.

Get Out & Fill Your Boots Son

Record Store Day this year is fast approaching ... April 19th ... & just like last year we hope to be spinning some wax on FRI 18th ( probably not much mind ... jumps, skips, crackles like a fatty bit o'bacon and our little dance floor is like one of The Bouncy Hunters Castles )

Anyhow amidst some of the especially re-released tracks available and there are loads of boss re-releases, there's also a few 7's about worth a look in. All kinds of stunts going off too .... maybe worth a trip out anyhow ? Heres a few available in the stores I've listened to lately ... get out though & fill your boots son.
